In the interview series so far, we have done interviews with some of the big names in the SEO and affiliate marketing industry. In this week interview series, we have a guy who has earned a big name for himself in the SEO and affiliate marketing domain in a short period of time.

1. Hi Matthew, it is really great to have you as a guest on BloggerLiving, can you please introduce yourself in case some of my readers don’t know you?

I am Matthew Woodward, I run an award-winning SEO and internet marketing blog which I started in 2012. The primary focus of my blog is to help anyone who has an online business to become successful through my detailed tutorials, case studies and reviews.

2. How did you get into Blogging?

I was first introduced to the online world at around the age of 13 when I started writing online gaming reviews. This ultimately leads me into a career in the marketing industry where I worked with some large brand names.

However, I found the corporate world too stiff and inflexible which meant they couldn’t keep up with the ever-changing world of SEO. So I left and started my blog.

3. What is your motivation for Blogging?

I have a huge passion for SEO and because it is always changing that passion is kept alive so what better way to express that than by helping people use SEO to improve their online businesses.

4. Who is your favourite blogger and what do you learn from Him/Her?.

I guess that would need to be a shout out to the original influencer Darren Rowse. Who I learnt a lot from in my early days and has a great story.

5. When you just started online there are a lot of pitfalls you may face, how are you able to overcome these pitfalls?

You need to be adaptable and learn quickly. It’s inevitable in any new job/industry that you will make mistakes and come up against new problems. I still do now, but it’s important to not make the same mistakes over and over. Instead, face your challenges head-on using a calm and intelligent approach. And if you’re really smart… then you can use that experience as your next piece of content to help others.

6. We all make mistakes, what is your greatest mistake as a blogger and how do you feel about it? I mean, what would you have done instead?

It may sound a bit cliche but I wouldn’t have done anything differently. Mistakes are valuable lessons that help you learn and grow as a blogger. And as an SEO it is in my nature to continuously test and trial new and old strategies, which often involves things not going how I had hoped.

7. What is still your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge is, well… me. I like to tinker about with my websites and very often that leads to me breaking those websites. It’s a great way to learn and grow, but not so good when it takes a lot of time and money to fix.

8. What are those SEO strategies that you believe in? What do you think of a unique strategy you follow that makes you different from other bloggers?

I look at a lot of websites through my blog and agency and the biggest mistake I see is that people obsess over link building but they haven’t even got the basic foundations built on their site.

I recently did a common-sense SEO audit of my website that involved listening to what my readers had to say. This helped me come up with an action plan to build a really strong foundation, fix any issues, give my site a makeover and produce a solid content strategy. All before even thinking about building links.

9. Blogging has been striking for more than a decade. Can the upcoming bloggers shine even now starting a blog? Or blogging saturates?

Yes of course! The online world is growing and if you have some fresh new insights that can solve people’s problems, then there will always be a place in the market.

10. List down your few favourite sources where you will get ideas for your next blog post topics and content?

My readers provide feedback through blog comments and social media. I am active on forums to see what everyone is talking about and if there are any problems I can solve. I keep an ear to the ground in the industry also and listen to what my competitors and saying. I also play around with experiments in the background and if I come across some valuable information I will share it to my readers.

11. As an SEO expert, how you go about promoting your blog on the web? And is there any precautionary measure you take while spreading words about your work on the web?

I have a number of promotion strategies I use when I first publish an article, including emailing my subscribers, promoting on social media, discussing the topic in forums and contacted anyone featured in the article and usually they then help promote it too.

And then I will set up ongoing promotion strategies where we reach out to any website that has content that my article could add value to and see if they will link to it. But we do our homework – this is a very thorough process and we only get in touch with a website if we can add genuine value.

12. It is always great to see Matthew Woodward growing, what is your traffic generation strategy?

The same as ever. Create content that helps my audience in an easy to understand format, combined with a strong link building strategy to increase SERP visibility.

13. What is the best way to make money blogging and do you think it can work for everybody?

I think as long as you are completely honest and upfront and only make solid recommendations then affiliate marketing is a fantastic way to earn an income.

You can build good relationships both with the product/service providers (which opens up the door for future collaborations) and also your audience by helping them find a tool, service or product that will save them time and money and solve their problem.

14. What are your major income streams?

I make an income on the blog mainly through affiliate sales, I used to do consulting too as you can see from my income reports however I don’t do much anymore. I usually have a project for the blog on the go that ultimately generates an income and of course any clients that hire my agency from the blog add to my income stream.

15. What’s the best advice you ever received?

I think the best advice I ever received was from my father…

“Find your passion in life & then find a way to make money with it.”

16. What is your best advice for bloggers in general? Any Special Tips for Beginners and other Bloggers?

My best advice right now would be to ensure your website has a strong SEO foundation and create high-quality content without cutting corners. 

Listen to the internet, listen to what your readers actually want and use your content to connect them to solutions.

17. Discuss your achievements as a Blogger which will inspire other Bloggers also. What is your biggest achievement to date?

I am really quite proud of the 8 awards the blog has won.

18. What is your future plan?
